Geranite

Last Updated: 11/29/2023

Name: Geranite (Geran)

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Near-Human

Homeworld: Geran

Coloration: Purple, Blue, Green, or Pink

Biology: The Geranites, also less commonly referred to as the Geran, were classified as a near-Human species. They originated from the planet of Geran, a world in the Outer Rim with an atmosphere containing at least some percentage of the element “Hydron-Three.” Because of this, the Geranites could not exist outside of their homeworld without the presence of special pressurized masks (and often suits) containing a steady supply of Hydron-Three. We do not have any official illustrations of what the Geranites look like underneath the masks, but they have been described as resembling humans, but with colorful yet pale skin that could be at least blue, green, purple, or pink. They also usually only had 3 fingers per hand, but aside from that, we know of any other physical differences from Humans.

Lore: Little is known about the mysterious Geranites, both physically and societally. They have appeared as early as the Old Republic, and as late as the end of the Galactic Civil War. The ones we have seen have just been scattered around the galaxy, and the planet Geran is still currently an enigma. The one little bit of lore surrounding them that was revealed in Star Wars Legends was that it was common for Geranites to believe in a religion revolving around some sort of deities known as the “Sky Seraphs.” (They also seem to have been more commonly referred to as the Geran during the Old Republic era, and Geranites around the time of the films.)

Legends/Canon: The Geranites first appeared in Legends via Return of the Jedi in 1983, and subsequently made appearances in Old Republic media. However, they have since been made Canon thanks to the Star Wars: Geektionary.

Unexplored: Across both Canon and Legends, the Geranites have seldom been explored. This is especially bizarre seeing that they are one of the species selected to appear in The Old Republic. Exploring what their homeworld is like, and how Hydron-Three is incorporated into it would be a step in the right direction. What are the details behind their helmets and suits, and what do they look like underneath? Were they isolationists or were they a part of any major galactic faction? What were some deeper details regarding their government, culture, economy, traditions, languages, history, and even religion? There are a lot of things that can be expanded upon to make the Geranites infinitely more recognizable and memorable.

Additional Notes: I really like the designs of the Geranite helmets. They’ve always had a bulky, unique appearance to them and while they’re hard to identify without the aide of visual guides, it is fun to learn when a certain masked character actually turns out to be a member of this species. Seeing as they are Canon, I’m definitely excited to see and learn more of them sometime in the future, maybe even in the High Republic!

(The Geranite in Return of the Jedi was an employee at Jabba’s Palace named Doallyn (the one who Chewbacca threw down the stairs), however, there was another guard named Brock Starsher who also wore the same exact helmet. Starsher’s species has never been identified, and while it would make sense for he to also be a Geranite, it definitely seems like they intend/intended for him to be Human.)
