Boltrunian

Last Updated: 09/09/2025

Name: Boltrunian

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Near-Human/Reptilian

Homeworld: Unknown (Boltrunia System)

Coloration: Pink, Tan, or Green

Biology: The Boltrunians were a humanoid, seemingly reptilian-like species sometimes found within the Star Wars universe. They were known for their large, muscular bodies, and disproportionately large chest areas. Standing anywhere from 1.8 to 2 meters in height, they had thick, grizzled skin which varied from pink to green to even a reddish-orange. Most Boltrunians had lumpy, rounded heads with various ridges on both sides (although at least one green Boltrunian has been observed with a much smoother head and unusually pointed ears, as well as a crest running straight over the top of their cranium, potentially indicating the existence of Boltrunian subspecies).

They had long, pointed teeth spread fairly far apart from each other, accentuated by their severe underbites and long, pink tongues. Their eyes were usually bright red, with some possessing pupils while others were solid red. Excessive warts were a genetic certainty for nearly every Boltrunian. It was also impossible for a Boltrunian to grow hair, though seemingly not common. They were known for being incredibly resilient, and were able to be Force Sensitive, as well as technically survive while missing the lower half of their body, making them a very formidable species. They had the ability to pronounce Galactic Basic, and could live well over 70 years in age, potentially possessing rather lengthy lifespans, though the upper limit is unconfirmed.

Lore: Nothing has really ever been revealed regarding the Boltrunians greater culture across both Canon or Legends. We know they originated somewhere in the Boltrunia System (possibly on a planet named Boltrunia), but nothing else is known about their origins or homeworld. Every once in a while, one would pop up in the galaxy, usually serving as pirates, although at least one individual named Maw was actually an infamous “Dark Jedi.” They were also notorious for their short tempers and aggressive, scary demeanors that more-or-less matched their rather gruesome appearances. Within Star Wars Canon specifically, at least one Boltrunian appeared during the High Republic era, meaning they had been identified by the Republic and known by the galaxy for quite some time by the rise of the Empire.

Continuity: The Boltrunians exist in Canon in name only, being mentioned in some High Republic material, however, all of their depictions and illustrations are currently exclusive to Star Wars Legends.

Unexplored: The Boltrunians were one of those species who were clearly intentionally left at least slightly ambiguous. However, unlike other “mysterious” species like those belongingto Yoda or even Maz Kanata, they just never carried all that much intrigue with them. With their introduction into Canon, maybe they can receive a lore overhaul, as well as a more consistent and unique appearance. This can be achieved, of course, by exploring them further via illustrations. But also by expanding upon their homeworld, culture, society, economy, exports, politics, place in the galactic hierarchy, relationship with other species and factions, origins and history, galactic contributions, language, religions, distinctive habits or traditions, etc. These are most of the core elements that make up the well rounded characters in Star Wars, and with so little to go off of in Star Wars Legends, most of these will have been explored for the very first time!

Additional Notes: The Boltrunians were one of those species that always kind of stuck in the back of my mind as a kid, but they were never quite memorable enough to be one of my favorites or really be considered for any of the fan projects that I’ve worked on. Still, there is something fascinatingly mysterious about them, and I definitely want to see more of them in Canon someday. Maw was definitely an interesting character for his time, and his legacy sort of lives on now in the form of Darth Maul, so at the very least, that’s something to be respected.

(Also, if you were curious where the live action images of Maw came from, don’t worry, they weren’t from a film you’ve never seen, and you’re not going crazy. Instead, he first appeared in the video game “Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II” thanks to the awesome live action cutscenes they used to make at the time. It’s a pretty interesting series if you have the time to check them out, and I wish they still did stuff like that today.)
