Octeroid

Name: Octeroid

Humanoid: No

Classification: Amphibious/Alternative/Giant

Homeworld: Octero IV

Coloration: Blue, Green, Gray, & Pink

Biology: The Octeroids were a bizarre aquatic species found in the Star Wars galaxy. The ones we’ve seen stood approximately 2 to 2.2 meters in height, although it was possible that they could be even larger (as they are sometimes referred to as giants). We have yet to receive a good look at their body, but we know they possessed an unknown number of tentacles of seemingly varying length, and no traditional arms or hands. It is still unclear whether they walk on yet more tentacles, or whether they possess actual feet. Regardless, their wide bodies only added to their imposing stature.

The heads of an Octeroid were large and round with semi-loose skin. This skin appeared to be thick and rigid, grayish-blue/green in coloration, and covered in massive, protruding light blue veins. Their skin became pinkish near the eyelids protecting the single massive eye situated in the middle of their face. This reflective eye sported a solid black sclera and a yellowish-orange iris. There was a large ridge-like brow running above their eye that displayed two small spines on either side and a few barely visible eyelashes in the center.

We do not know whether they possessed any external oral or tympanic cavities, and while it’s believed that they had some sort of visible gills , these have yet to be seen either. What we do know is that Octeroids could not breathe on land, so they were forced to wear some sort of breathing apparatus when offworld. Whether this device covered a nose, mouth, gills, or any mixture of the three has yet to be revealed. It is similarly unclear if the Octeroids could speak, and if so, what languages they did and did not have the capacity to pronounce. At the very least, we know Octeroids naturally had a very calm and gentle disposition and it was rare to come across one that was violent.

Lore: While we don’t know much about the Octeroids, in-universe the galaxy definitely does. Apparently the Octeroids were known for their unique and imposing appearance, considered bizarre even among the many diverse species found throughout the galaxy. Fortunately, they also carried a reputation as “gentle giants” and so they were rather approachable and easily fit in with others.

Because they were a simple and curious race, many Octeroids chose to leave Octero IV to explore everything the universe had to offer. They weren’t necessarily known for being the most intelligent of species, and they seldom even attempted to use complex technologies. Thankfully, there were few who would choose to tangle with an Octeroid, and the Octeroids were, in turn, almost never violent in any capacity, choosing instead to simply “go with the flow.” They would often receive nicknames by others which they sometimes comprehend, such as the Octeroid Glaucus who was usually referred to as both “Big Eye” and “Big Guy.”

Legends/Canon: The Octeroid have only appeared in Star Wars Canon via the Sequel films and media set during The High Republic.

Unexplored: There are still a lot of anatomical and biological secrets revolving around Octeroid. What do their bodies look like, how many tentacles did they have, what did they look like, and how exactly did they achieve locomotion? What did their mouths look like, how did the breathing apparatuses simulate breathing underwater, and could they speak, whether it was their own unique language or something as common as Basic? How long was the average lifespan of the Octeroid, how tall or large could they grow, did their massive eye give them any special ability or limitation, and was it common or rare for an Octeroid to possess Force sensitivity? Were they more comfortable on land or underwater, and were they proficient swimmers?

Exploring more instances of this race would also be incredibly beneficial. What was their level of awareness? How did they view the galaxy around them, and why were they so curious and adventurous? Was it possible for them to get mad, and were they ever caught up in any conflict? How did they view each other, and what kind society did they have back on Octero IV? We know they seldom used technology, but what kind of architecture (above or below water) did they have? Did they yield any major galactic exports, and if not, what fueled their economy? Were they ever a part of a galactic faction or group? And were there any notable Octeroids in galactic history?

Additional Notes: I really like this design! Like many of the species introduced in Solo: A Star Wars Story, it feels fresh and unique, with some great prosthetics being used to bring Glaucus to life. It was also fun to see them pop back up in the High Republic, which gives me hope of seeing more appear in the future as they definitely have not been forgotten. I hope their characterization as a species remains consistent, because the whole gentle giant motif is super fun. And I definitely plan to include one or more in a future story I am writing, and encourage you to try to do the same! There’s a lot of fun to be had with the mighty, peaceful Octeroids.
