Patrolian

Name: Patrolian

Humanoid: No

Classification: Amphibious/Dwarf

Homeworld: Patrolia

Coloration: Varied

Biology: Patrolians were short, amphibious creatures that originated from the watery world of Patrolia. They sported 2 sets of gills and multiple fins across their body, allowing for incredibly swift and maneuverable swimming, and it is theorized that they evolved from some sort of fish local to Patrolia. In addition, they possessed lungs and could function perfectly fine above or below water, with no ill effects associated with either. Via their eye stalks, their protruding eyes allowed for a wide field of vision underwater, and their clothes had to be specially modified to accommodate for the rather large dorsal fin extending out from their back.

They had a number of small spikes protruding from certain parts of their bodies, including their large gill flaps and forearms. Their skin coloration varied widely from instance to instance, with some being blue, green, purple, and pink. Their height never surpassed 1 meter, and they were generally regarded as short by most of the galaxy. Their eyes were almost always dark red in coloration. They had the ability to speak Basic, although often with a noticeable accent.

Lore: Almost nothing is known about the Patrolian’s collective culture, society, or civilization. Due to their general lawless nature and desire to be pirates, criminals, or bounty hunters, it is assumed that their home world’s social structure was not incredibly articulated and allowed for them to grow up disdaining rules, authority, and the government. This has been observed from the High Republic era all the way until the Clone Wars, with nearly every Patrolian we’ve seen pursuing some sort of criminal lifestyle.

It is unclear whether they dwelled primarily above water or below water on Patrolia, although many hints suggest it could be a mixture of the both (similar to species like the Nautolans). The Patrolians seem to have originally been created to have been members of the Galactic Republic, although it is now unclear whether this initial intention was ever brought to fruition or if they never ended up represented among the Senate.

Legends/Canon: While the Patrolians did exist in the late days of Star Wars Legends, no information existing about them was lost when they made the jump into Star Wars Canon as all pre-existing data regarding the species came directly from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. Since then, other Patrolians have appeared in more recent media, where we have learned more Canon-exclusive information about them.

Unexplored: We know a lot about Patrolian biology, but nearly nothing about their homeworld or species as a whole. The only instances of Patrolians we have seen on Canon have fallen into some sort of criminal lifestyle. They clearly have a natural cunning, so as of yet, we have no idea how a Patrolian on the side of good, or with clear morals, would act. As stated above, we still do not know about Patrolia either. The entire planet, including their culture, economy, society, and governmental structure has yet to be pictured or laid out. The potential for some amazing exploratory stories, underwater tales, and interesting, intelligent amphibious characters is definitely here, it just needs to be taken advantage of.

Additional Notes: The Patrolians were actually created as a concept for a Jedi in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Unfortunately, this was cut and they were shelved for years, finally being revived and released through the character Robonino in the animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Almost every time the Patrolians are featured in a piece of Star Wars media, they are utilized quite heavily and generally shown a lot, allowing us to get a good look at their designs and how they act. Still, we have yet to really see a morally righteous Patrolian character (the closest being Farks, the Patrolian that raised Qort during the High Republic) and they seem to hold a lot of storytelling potential and utilization that I would like to see expanded upon further in the future of Star Wars Canon. (If this ever changes, I will make sure to come back and update this article!)
