Peasle

Name: Peasle

Last Updated: 1/31/2024

Humanoid: No

Classification: Crustacean/Insectoid/Dwarf

Homeworld: Unknown

Coloration: Orange & Tan

Biology: The Peasles were a race of small sentient arthropods sharing traits with common sand fleas or pill bugs. They stood approximately .5 to .8 meter in height, with slightly hunched backs that supported their shell-like exoskeletons. Their arms, heads, and segmented backs were red or orange in coloration, while their stomachs were more of a tan or cream. They possessed 8 limbs, 1 pair of primary arms, 1 pair of primary legs, and four secondary limbs that they usually kept tucked up against their stomach. These limbs were thin and segmented in 2 to 4 places, each ending in a single point and possessing no fingers, toes, claws, or other extremities.

The Peasles possessed no true neck, and simply had a small head housed under the carapace extending from their back. They possessed large eyes with blue pupils, a set of long, segmented antenulles embellished with 2 yellow rings each, a second pair of much shorter antennae, and a small mouth sporting what appeared to be two large buck teeth. Despite the unusual shape of their mouth, they did have the capacity to speak Basic. When startled, the Peasles could curl up into a ball, protected by their somewhat durable outer exoskeleton. It seems as though in this state, they were capable of rolling similar to the likes of the Lurmen, Amani, or even Droidekas, however, this form of locomotion is seemingly rarely utilized.

Lore: Nothing has really been revealed about the Peasle’s history as of yet. We know that they were part of the greater galactic landscape by the time of the High Republic, and that at least one belonged to the Rebel Alliance. They often held lesser roles, although it is unclear if this is due to discrimination, a lower level of intelligence, or simply because they do not possess hands. Neither their homeworld or any politically notable or influential Peasles have yet to be revealed, only individual instances sparsely located throughout the galaxy. Like most sentient Insectoid or Crustacean species, the Peasles did not wear clothing, although they did accessorize with belts, sashes, or bandoliers.

Legends/Canon: The Peasles are exclusive to recent Canon Star Wars media.

Unexplored: There’s a lot left to be fleshed out in regards to the Peasles. Knowing their homeworld and where it’s located would be nice. Seeing how their society, economy, and government function, as well as how culturally advanced they are would also help characterize the species more. Were they isolationists or very open to the galaxy, and were they spread thin or concentrated in certain locations? Did they have any unique cultural practices, and did they have strong relationships, ties, or rivalries with other sentient species? Other things that can be explored include their diets, they history of conflicts, their relationships to other galactic factions, reproductive and lifespan cycles, and even the rest of the galaxy’s perception of them.

Additional Notes: Due to the art style of the comic they first appeared in, I wasn’t entirely sold on the species, but over time they have grown on me. As far as Insectoid species go, the pill bug is still pretty fresh, and the links to things like sand fleas or even shrimp add to the uniqueness. I’m glad they’ve made their way into the High Republic, and I would appreciate seeing a much more realistic depiction, potentially even in live action, someday!
