Nuxan

Last Updated: 11/30/2023

Name: Nuxan

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Alternative/Amphibious

Homeworld: Unknown

Coloration: Green and Brown

Biology: From the neck down, the Nuxan were nearly identical to most human or human-like species. Their skin, however, presented an olive green pigmentation, covered with mottled, angular spots generally brown in coloration. Their necks were very wide and fleshy, giving way to a rather large head. Their cheeks and chins were wide and almost gave the appearance of a mask, if not for the same coloration and markings as the rest of their body. Their noses were slightly smaller than average, but still visible. And their eyes were large, pupil-less, and glass-like in appearance, with little to no eye lids visible. Above and below their eyes were rectangular brown spots that were very uniformed. On the back of their heads were a single fin, although it is unclear if they possess gills.

Because of their appearance and seemingly similar biological makeup to species such as the Nautolan or the Mythrol, it is assumed that they are amphibious/aquatic, but this has technically not been confirmed as of yet. Lastly, Nuxan have a very distinct natural odor that they cannot control, usually described as fishy and putrid. They have the ability to speak Basic with no issues, although their native language is unknown.

Lore: Since only one Nuxan has been seen so far, we know little to nothing about their society. It is assumed that they were not a part of the Galactic Republic, and most likely remained neutral during the Galactic Civil War as well, although the one Nuxan we do see does somewhat independently work for the Rebellion as an informant.

Legends/Canon: The Nuxan were introduced fairly recently in the current Star Wars Canon, and did not appear within Legends.

Unexplored: So, with the Nuxan we really just need to lay the groundwork for the species as a whole. What is their homeworld called, and is it watery giving way to the idea that they were definitely amphibious, or did it possess some other unique biome(s)? On that note, are they truly amphibious or simply aquatic? What is their economy based around, what kind of traditions have they developed, and what social structure does their society resemble the most, if any? What kind of galactic history do they have, and were they discovered millennia before the main eras of the films, or just a few hundred years before the Clone Wars? How did they first learn Basic?

Were they affiliated with any sides during the Clone Wars, or did they remain neutral or even oblivious to the whole conflict? Were they affected by the Galactic Empire, causing one or more to join with the Rebel causes (or even the entire race) or was that an isolated event and they simply remained neutral or even in support of the Empire? And were they a part of the New Republic, or were they touched by the First Order’s violent conquests? These are all very basic questions, but they help lay what will hopefully become more interesting avenues to take the Nuxan species, or even just an individual Nuxan character, down further into their development within Canon.

Additional Notes: They really do seem like a cross between a Nautolan, a Mythrol, and Pyke, but I’m a big fan of the more humanoid amphibious species, so I do enjoy the design. Since they were so recently introduced, and only in a comic, albeit an important one, I think there is room for them to be further explored via official Star Wars media sometime in the near future. But even if not, I think they’re worth trying to develop in one of your own Star Wars fan works somewhere down the line. They fall into the a middle ground as far as species’ potential goes, and sometimes that’s okay!
