Biology: The Aganof have some of the most bizarre anatomy out of any sentient species to ever exist within Star Wars. They were vaguely insectoid in nature, although not necessarily officially classified as such in-universe. They had long bodies with a gelatinous texture and potentially amorphous properties. They propelled themselves similarly to that of millipedes via small tendrils that doubled as hundreds of little legs. They also had longer tendrils extending from either end of their body, presumably utilized as feelers or extrasensory organs. In addition, they possessed a number of mushroom-like growths extended from their lower back area, identified as olfactory stalks. Due to these organs, the Aganof had an incredible sense of smell, helping them navigate throughout their subterranean home.

The Aganof possess no true head, with each end of their body simply supporting a jointed segment and one large, bony claw or cluster of jagged claws used for hunting or self defense. While both ends were similar, they were distinguished as the front and back by length of segments and relation to certain other aspects of the Aganof’s elongated body. The coloration or pigmentation of the Aganof has never been revealed, although they are believed to be a dull tan, white, or even translucent, sometimes featuring much darker spots on their backs and sides. Because they were not exposed to any light throughout the entirety of their indeterminable lifespans, we know at the very least that they were very pale.

Their bodies themselves were around 1.3 – 3.5 meters long and were often split into 4 to 6 distinct segments, the front and back sporting the claws, while middle sections including wrinkled flaps and protrusions. These “flaps” could take on the appearance of more animalistic fins or even plant-like petals. Underneath each individual flap was a mouth, although the presence of teeth or a tongue has not been confirmed. It seems that their mouths emitted an intense heat, contrasted by the rather cold nature of the rest of their bodies thanks to their body flaps possessing unique “heat-dissipating” properties. These small pockets of heat would draw in smaller prey who were then captured by a number of small tentacles and placed into their low hanging mouths to be digested.

While the Aganof did possess the ability to feel, taste, and smell, they were completely blind and deaf, possessing no visual or auditory organs. Instead, they communicated via vibrations and pheromones/distinguishable smells. This made it incredibly hard for them to communicate with other sentient species, but apparently it was possible through some currently unknown means or technology. Not that this situation arose often, as the Aganof were naturally isolationists and usually lived by themselves, rarely encountering another of their own while dwelling within the vast underground cave systems of Kuras III.

Due to their lives of solitude, the Aganof were hermaphroditic, able to lay fully fertilized eggs without the requirement of a mate. Because of this, the nature of their reproductive organs is considered something of a mystery, as is the location on their body where the eggs were ejected. The size of these eggs, duration of incubation, and number produced in each batch is also undetermined. Other internal organs were also difficult to pinpoint, but we know that at least they possessed a stomach and a complex brain.

Despite their strange anatomical dispositions, the Aganof were incredibly intelligent and spent most of their time both eating and thinking. They developed intricate personal philosophies that they were rarely, if ever, able to share with others due to their limited ability to communicate. They also could not develop any form of technology because of their lack of proper limbs, but were still seemingly in the midst of the evolutionary process, if the other sentient denizens of Kuras III were any indication.

They appeared to be immune to many infections and diseases that afflicted other species, and there was no known way to gauge the health of an individual Aganof. They were completely omnivorous, devouring any small insects or animals that were attracted to their heat pockets, as well as eating local plant life found within their cave dwellings. They considered Kuras III’s local “infectious moss” as an especially delicious treat, unaffected by it’s harmful properties that plagued most other local wildlife and species, sentient or otherwise. Because of this interesting diet and other ambiguous lifestyle choices, the full lifespan of an Aganof was unknown. Although based on the evidence provided, it was most likely longer than most.

Lore: As mentioned above, the Aganof were a race of lonely philosophers, mentally advanced but physically primitive. Due to their underdeveloped bodies, they could not apply their vast knowledge to any field or craft, so instead spent all of their days wallowing in thought and pondering the mysteries of the universe while constantly feeding on any small lifeforms or plants they came across. It seems that they possessed knowledge that other planets did in fact exist, but none had ever ventured off of Kuras III and as such, they could only imagine what other wonders may exist outside of their empty caverns.

They also somewhat coexisted with the other sentient species native to their homeworld, a primitive race known simply as the “Hairy Savages,” and a slime-like sentients species called the Pulras (although they almost never crossed paths with each other as the Aganof lived completely subterranean lives while the others were solely surface dwellers). In the end, the Aganof never congregated and thus never formed any sort of communities, societies, governments, economies, or religions.

Continuity: The Aganof only appear briefly in Star Wars Legends and have yet to be Canonized.

Unexplored: This is a tough one, because the species not having any real established history or characteristics is part of what… well, characterizes them. One thing that might be worth exploring, however, is how an Aganof would react to finally getting the opportunity to leave Kuras III. Just getting an inner monologue would be incredibly fascinating as their lifelong philosophies are either torn down or reinforced at every turn and discovery.

Additional Notes: At a first glance, I just thought that this species was odd, nothing more. But the more I dove into their lore, the more I began to realize just how tragic they were. They’re only a step up from the whole “brain-in-a-jar” concept and it hurts knowing that so many of them spent so much time thinking but were limited to only the knowledge found within their caves. Most of their lives would have been empty, lonely, and without a facet in which to share their philosophies, fruitless. Still, this is what makes them interesting, and I wish they and the Pulras could make their way into Canon in some way, shape, or form so that we could see at least one, if not the whole species, finally achieve mobility and autonomy.
