Biology: The Ezaraa were a monstrous race, standing somewhere between 1.8 and 2.4 meters tall. They had thin but surprisingly muscular physiques, with pinkish-red or sometimes almost gray, wrinkly skin. Their abdomens and necks were often slightly elongated, and while it is not known exactly what their head looks like, we do know that they were hairless and bulbous in shape. Their eyes were slightly sunken into their faces and were an almost luminescent, pupil-less yellow color.

Many mistook their skull-like helmets and sparse body armor for an exoskeleton, however, these white or gray plates were seemingly fully removable and simply for protection and/or intimidation. They evolved to survive on a strictly carnivorous diet, being able to consume and digest the meat of almost any creature (sentient or otherwise), which would suggest they have a mouth full of razor sharp teeth intended for tearing through flesh. They had irregularly large, four-fingered hands which were always kept concealed, and we have yet to see what their feet look like. Their height varied rather widely, with some being no bigger than the average human, and many others towering over entire crowds. Like most humanoid species of their kind, they had the ability to speak Basic.

Lore: The Ezaraa were a warrior race from the planet bearing the same name. They were notoriously known for being carnivores, as well as incredibly hostile and brutal in nature. The majority of the race belonged to an empire known as the “Dominion of the Ezaraa,” which had conquered and assimilated at least two continents of their homeworld. This Dominion seemingly began preparing for galactic conquest even before the fall of the Republic, and had every intention of overthrowing the Galactic Empire and replacing it with their own galactic dictatorship. Once in charge, they planned to gather up all species they saw as inferior and kill and consume them in a mass genocide and cannibalistic event.

In general, they considered most smaller sentient species to be inferior to them both mentally and physically. Their towering stature intimidated most other species, and they had no qualms about killing and consuming sentient life, considering the meat of most humanoid species to be delicious. Still, they could be rather civilized when need be, and the Ezaraa who were not a part of the Dominion did not necessarily share in their bloodlust and aggression, although these individuals rarely if ever left (or were allowed to leave) their homeworld.

The Ezaraa loved collecting weaponry, and scoured the galaxy for enough armaments to take on the Empire by themselves. They often bartered or traded with other governments for munitions and armed space craft, and surprisingly, very rarely resorted to breaking the law in an attempt to acquire weaponry. Still, they weren’t above assassination, theft, or other organized crime to achieve their goals. At some point in the waning days of the Empire, they clashed with Imperial forces while attempting to retrieve a Kyber Crystal. This skirmish resulted in the slaughter of many of their forces, and there has yet to be any word on whether they launched any further, full out assault against the Galactic Empire before the end of the Galactic Civil War.

Legends/Canon: The Ezarra we’re first introduced in a fairly recent comic book featuring both Dr. Aphra and Luke Skywalker, making them exclusive to the current Star Wars Canon.

Unexplored: There are many facets of the Ezaraa that are sparsely explored. We do not actually know what their home world looks like, how their economy and society functioned before and after the rise of the Dominion, and what the general populous does on a daily basis/what they think of the dominion itself. Are all of their species really war mongers, or just the most dominant ones who are able to travel offworld? What are some of their cultural traditions? Why do they always wear those distinct helmets alongside either exoskeleton-like armor or thick trench coats? What do their faces look like? And what do they think about consuming different species, as well as who they consider to be lesser or equal to them?

We also don’t know when they started preparing to take over the galactic government, if they somehow knew about the rise of the Empire before it even happened, and how much preparation they actually put into their plans. How many soldiers and weapons had they amassed in total? Had they actually formed alliances with other species, or did they consider everyone else inferior? What were their thoughts on the rebellion? What exactly was their game plan for when they took over, if any, and how did they plan on enslaving or corralling all of the lesser races together? And ultimately, did they ever try to wage a full on war with the Empire, or did the Empire secretly go in and wipe them out? More so, did the Empire even see them as a threat, and were the Ezaraa scared off by the slaughter of their scout forces? Lastly, what were their thoughts on the New Republic? Did they try to declare war on them as well, or were they taken out by New Republic forces or even the First Order?

Additional Notes: I actually really like the design of this species. Their helmets are very reminiscent of something like the Court of Owls from the Batman comics, but their stature makes them far more imposing. Their backstory is also fairly unique, although I wish it was fleshed out a lot more. I really want to see just how big their fighting force is, and how long they would last against the Empire. Who knows, maybe they’ll show up again, as we begin to dive deeper into what happened during the time between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Either way, I think there’s clearly a lot of potential here for exploration, and I definitely plan on using an Ezaraa in one of my future works someday!
