Name: Daichyura
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Saurian
Homeworld: Unknown
Coloration: Yellow, Orange, Blue, Brown, and Green
Biology: The Daichyura were a sentient Saurian creature seemingly found rarely throughout the Star Wars universe. Their bodies were rather humanoid in nature, featuring the same general build and seemingly anatomical features. They had five fingered hands, and the female Daichyura did possess breasts. Their skin was rather thick and wrinkled, and appeared to be greenish-brown in coloration.
Their heads were based off of the real-world “Parasaurolophus,” with a large crest extending up and back from the top of their heads. This crest appeared to be made of a different material, and was yellowish-orange with blue stripes. The rest of their head was fairly rounded and wrinkled, possessing large, glossy, solid black eyes, an open ear cavity but no actual ear, and what appears to be around six slots on the front of their face. Most of these slots are said to be individual mouths, and the exact number is still tentative, but it’s possible the upper two may actually be nostril cavities. Because of this, it is currently unclear whether the Daichyura can actually speak Basic or not.
Lore: Nothing is known about the Daichyura, as only two have ever appeared, they did not speak, and no additional lore was ever revealed about them within or outside the confines of the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG. The two things that seems to have been gleaned based off of context alone is that they were a rare, elusive, or isolationist species, and they had some sort of connection to their fellow Saurian species, the Krex. Some fans believe that they are related to the Vurk species in some way, although this is simply a common misconception based on the fact that both species were based on the Parasaurolophus, albeit in very different ways. No connection aside from this inspiration exists.
Legends/Canon: The Daichyura were one of the last alien species to be introduced into Star Wars Legends, and have yet to make an appearance in Canon despite being introduced into Star Wars: The Old Republic almost a year after the shift to Canon had already taken effect.
Unexplored: So because this species holds such a weird place in Star Wars Legends, and never really got the chance to be explored because of the timeframe it was introduced, we can only hope someone at Star Wars will take not of its unique design and give it new line in the current Star Wars Canon. Interesting things to explore either when that happens, or if you simply want to include it in your own fan work include the following:
What is this species’ homeworld? Did they share it with that of the Krex, and if not, what is the connection between the 2 species? Do they have a predator-prey relationship, maybe simply a longstanding rivalry, or could they even have worked together to build a sustainable Saurian society, as they both seem to be incredibly rare and possibly on the verge of extinction? Did they play any greater role in the galaxy, whether based on resource or politics? And would they become more or less prevalent as we moved away from the Old Republic and closer to the High Republic, Clone Wars, Galactic Civil Wars, etc.? And was there any special traditions, religions, practices, beliefs, or other unique, extensive lore that sets them apart from other Saurian species like the Vurk? Answers to these questions could help serve as the basis for crafting an incredibly interesting and memorable species, as the character design is already doing it’s part!
Additional Notes: I really, really like both the Daichyura and the Krex, and hope we can learn about them further in the future, although they’re kind of trapped based off of when they were conceived and implemented. I definitely plan on including one of these in a future short story, and I hope this species will stick on the back of your mind as well. Holding the title of “The Last Species Introduced in Star Wars Legends” (more or less) is a very interesting concept, and I just hope they weren’t introduced just to be immediately lost to obscurity as Star Wars: The Old Republic’s lifespan slowly comes to a close.
