Chistori

Name: Chistori

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Reptilian (Saurian)

Homeworld: Unknown

Coloration: Purple and Yellow

Biology: The Chistori were a humanoid, saurian species whose heads resembled real-world dinosaurs like velociraptors or even tyrannosaurus rexes. Their bodies were covered in yellow and purple scales, although from the neck down, they appeared to be approximately the same shape as most Human or Human-like species. They did, however, tower over other humanoids, usually standing at least 2 meters tall when fully grown. Their stomachs also often took on more of a tan or brown color, with thick, durable scales protecting their vital organs. Like many reptilian creatures, they were cold blooded in nature.

Their heads were perched atop incredibly thick and muscular necks. Their eyes were perched on opposite sides of their head, giving them a limited field of view with small blind spots. They could also unhinge their massive jaws, revealing a row of small, sharp teeth lining the top of their mouth and more sporadic but larger teeth protruding from their lower jaw. They generally had a severe underbite, revealing their large lower fangs, and their chins were very pronounced and pointed. Their nostrils were also set further down their snout in front of their eyes, and some Chistori even possessed an added sensory organ, taking the form of a pink bulge on their cheeks. They, like the majority of the species in the Star Wars galaxy, had the capacity to speak Galactic Basic.

Lore: Not much is known about the Chistori, but this is seemingly one of the few rare occasions where that is fully intentional. The Chistori were incredibly independent and hated interacting with the outside galaxy, meaning they were never recorded in any history books, charted by any explorers (because they usually killed any offworlders that crossed their paths), and even the Jedi had not kept any records of them.

We do know that the Chistori were a violent warrior race, who by their very nature, were quick-tempered, impatient, and generally unlikeable as far as other species were concerned. They had a great fear of and disdain for things they didn’t understand, including the likes of offworlders and most advanced technology. However, the thing they hated most of all was the Force. This put them at odds with any Jedi they came across, and if a Chistori were ever born with Force sensitivity, they would be shunned, treated incredibly poorly, and eventually either exiled or executed.

Despite their contempt for most technologies, they did develop space fairing vessels and a handful of them did take to the stars in search of employment. They were incredibly capable mercenaries, and the Separatists saw them as a valuable asset. Despite this, not many people even knew of their existence, and the ones who did simply assumed they were one of the many other already known reptilian species. At one point, they were often regarded as one of the rarest sentient species in the galaxy.

Continuity: The Chistori only appear a handful of times in Star Wars Legends, and have yet to be canonized.

Unexplored: In this specific case, it almost seems better not to explore this species any further. Occasionally the mystery is what makes things interesting, and it would be better to just explore an individual Chistori’s characterization than to develop the history, culture, and society of the species as a whole. You can explore how they adjusted to life outside of their mysterious homeworld. You can explain how most of the galaxy’s denizens simply assumed they were an oddly colored Trandoshan, Yinchorri, or even a Barabel. You could even explain their individual thoughts on the Jedi, or Force wielders in general, and how they either chose to be independent or side with the CIS. In my opinion, there are still things you can explore without ruining the mystery and intrigue of the species overall.

Additional Notes: Used sparingly, the Chistori have an immense amount of potential. It’s not everyday you come across a being that is considered to be one of the rarest creatures in the galaxy. In a lot of ways, the Chistori remind me of Yoda’s species, albeit with much more general information existing about them. While Yoda’s species is reliant on Force Sensitivity, the Chistori are seemingly the opposite, hating mysticism and relying on brute force. And that, along with a really appealing and colorful, cool design, makes them an incredibly interesting and unique package that I hope to see more of someday!
