Name: Clabronian
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Gastro-Cephalopod/Alternative
Homeworld: Clabron
Coloration: Purple, Pink, Tan, or Brown
Biology: The Clabronians were a fairly humanoid species, having the same general frame, height, number of limbs, and appendage digits as an adult Human when full grown, though they also possessed some almost octopus or squid-like traits as well. They have been observed with varying shades of pink, purple, and brown skin, lacking almost any form of hair on their bodies, including eyebrows and eyelashes, though they did have unique patches of hair on the sides of their heads. This black hair grew in horizontal spikes from the back side of their head towards their cheeks, almost resembling hands cradling the side of a Clabronian’s head. Additionally, often did not have much of a visible neck, with wide, rounded heads and double chins.
Clabronian mouths lacked proper lips, they possessed exposed slit nostrils with on a slightly raised bridge in place of a traditionally shaped nose, and their eyes were commonly squinted, sporting blue or yellow irises. There were three small blunt spines protruding from each side of their forehead, and a pair of rows of suction cup-like openings running from the top of their head down a set of two tentacles extending from the back of their heads. They had long, wide ears that draped down to their shoulders, almost akin to those seen on lepus-like species. Clabronians had the capacity to speak Galactic Basic Standard seemingly with no issue.
Lore: The Clabronians were considered a relatively inconsequential species within the galaxy by many, especially due to the fact that they had always remained neutral to galactic politics, at least until just prior to the collapse of the Galactic Republic. However, during the events of the Clone Wars, they had begun considering the idea of finally aligning themselves with the Galactic Republic for the first time. Antagonization from the Separatists faction had further pushed them towards this seeking this treaty, though they still had reservations as they sought membership without being involved in the war, desiring pacifism instead. All of this, unfortunately, was not in their favor, as the Republic had no active desire to bring them into the fold, Chancellor Palpatine choosing to ignore neutral worlds during the war, though the influential senator Padmé Amidala heard their cry and decided to meet with them anyway, without approval or Republic oversight or protection.
Things were not quite as they seemed when the senator of Naboo arrived on the Clabronians’ homeworld of Clabron, however, as upon landing, they were locked out of the meeting place and were open fired upon by a mysterious sniper. After some prompting, the planet’s Second Minister, a individual named Tarmin, let them in, telling them it was no longer safe for politicians. Inside, Padmé and her handmaiden escort found the Grand Minister, Stin, who has reached out to Padmé personally. He had been shot, and his health was failing. He reiterated their desire to stay out of conflict, but acknowledged that that may not be as realistic as they had hoped. If Padmé had been killed here, it would have led to many more issues, especially for his people, as the Republic would have been upon them in full force. Stin then passed from his wounds, with Tarmin taking over as the new leader of the planet, though they were unhappy about this turn of events.
Padmé called Tarmin to action, asking them to get over their fears and reservations, and to help protect their people. Agree with a new sense of resoluteness, Tarmin donned Padmé’s robe, and accompanied her handmaidens as they headed back for her ship on the nearby landing dock. This served as the perfect distraction, allowing the shooter, a Frenk mercenary named Lis Mohles, to take aim at who she believed was her target, while the senator actually crept up behind her, dispatching her with a well placed blaster shot. In the wake of these events, the Separatist-employed mercenary was arrested, and under new leadership, the Clabronians officially chose to pursue serious negotiations to ally themselves with the Republic, or at least aid them in the war through non-combat-related means, as Tarmin had learned, but being willing to sacrifice their life, that wars were fought in many different ways, not all of them immediately violent. Unfortunately, the Republic would be replaced by the Galactic Empire within the span of only a couple years, either before the Clabronians officially had a chance to be represented on the Senate or just after.
From what we know, the Clabronians held great wealth and influence, with their twin-mooned homeworld of Clabron being covered in massive cities that seemingly all connected to each other across landmasses, and were so bright, they could be viewed from orbit. They presented themselves as a somewhat standoffish yet peaceful species by, generally open to outside visitors it seemed. They had a very simple but lavished way of living, all seeming to don robes that reflected this idea. Their political structure was organized in a way that the “Grand Minister” held most of the power, followed by “Second Minister” just behind them. As mentioned above, they were also devout pacifists, and no known Clabrionian military, weaponry, or even basic security force, has ever been alluded to.
Continuity: The Clabronians only exist within Star Wars Canon.
Unexplored: I think one of the best things to explore with this species is what kind of impact they had on the galaxy (if any), and whether they primarily resided on Clabron or were spread out across the galaxy? Despite their Canon status, they have only really appeared once, so could they be considered a rarer species, maybe isolationists or with a waning population? What sort of aide did Tarmin believe they could offer the Republic, and why did the Separatists feel the need to specifically target them, outside of the general trap to lure Senator Amidala in? After the rise of the Empire, what became of the Clabronians? Did they ally themselves with any party during the Galactic Civil War, or did they continue attempt to remain neutral, maybe having the hope given to them by the senator of Naboo shattered?
Aside from these historical and political details, there are many other things to explore about their lore. What was their homeworld like aside from the brief glimpses we get, and were there any unique aspect to it not found on other worlds? Is there anything about their anatomy or biology that we don’t yet know about? What was their local political system like, as well as their global economy and potential exports? Did they have any bizarre and/or interesting local traditions, legends, beliefs, or religions? And did they ever develop any unique art, technology, methodologies, etc.? Answers to these questions and the other generic worldbuilding traits we usually discuss would go a long way in further distinguishing and characterizing the Clabronians.
Additional Notes: the Clabronians don’t present as the most fascinating of species, but there’s definitely some potential here, both in lore and design. I would love to see what happened to them following the deal of Grand Minister Stin and beyond the rise of the Galactic Empire. There’s some interesting stories that could be told here, especially of the political kind, and so I do hope we see more of them somewhere someday. I also think, while simple, the design is fun, and could honestly be adapted into live action with little issue in my opinion! (When I first wrote this article years ago, I had not actually read the comic they appeared from, and based everything on what I found on Wookieepedia and any pages posted online. I have since been able to locate the comic issue, and so updated the article accordingly, but I apologize for the original, unfinished, slightly erroneous state it existed in for years.)
