Biology: The Bufopel were a hulking species originating from a currently unnamed planet. They were massive, standing well over 2 meters in height and weighing way more than the average Wookiee. They had rotund figures with thick, pinkish-gray skin that was creased and blemished. They were well acclimated to cold weather, and seemingly had a healthy balance of muscle and blubber to sustain them. We’re not sure what the majority of their bodies looked like, but they possessed massive four-fingered hands and large feet. 

They had no visible neck, and the males (and possibly females) had thick, fluffy white beards that grew in a complete ring around their bald heads. Their heads were relatively small, wrinkled, and devoid of hair on top. They had small, beady eyes engulfed in large eyelids, tiny nostrils, and wide mouths. They have yet to be observed speaking Basic, although it is unclear whether this was by choice or because they were biologically incapable, instead speaking a language also known as “Bufopel.” They were also renowned for their incredible strength, and despite their rounded shape, they were generally incredibly muscular and durable.

Lore: Not much is known about the Bufopel, aside from the fact that they allied themselves with the Rebel Alliance. They were known for being a very peaceful people, however, they also had their own league of skilled warriors known as the “Bufopel Protectors.” They apparently gave the Empire a chance, but after being provoked, they sprung into action and became elite combatants for the Rebellion as they strove to restore democracy. They were renowned by the galaxy for their strength, and were revered but not usually feared as they were generally classified as “gentle giants.”

Continuity: The Bufopel are exclusive to the current Star Wars Canon.

Unexplored: So there is still a lot here that needs to be unwrapped in regards to the Bufopel. How exactly do the Bufopel Protectors work? Is it an organization, religion, brotherhood, military/militia, or just an Bufopel who chose to fight for the Rebellion? What exactly did the Empire do to push this usually peaceful species over the edge? What are Bufopel cities and towns like? Do they have large structures to accommodate for their large builds, what kind of materials do they use to shield them from the elements, and how advanced is their civilization as far as structures and technology goes? Did they develop spacefaring vessels and hyperspace technology, or were they visited by emissaries of the Republic who introduced them to all of that? Are there any other Bufopel colonies, and can they be found throughout the galaxy or do they lean towards the isolationist side? When did they link up with the Rebellion, and did they assist the Resistance as well? 

Additional Notes: I never thought anything of this species until I saw the image of the Bufopel Protectors from Star Wars: Commanders and realized they have a rather unique and interesting brutish design that I want to see more of. It may be hard to pull off in live action, as they’re TLJ appearance didn’t appear to be incredibly mobile, but maybe they will appear in some video game or animated series sometime down the line! Even Bufopel Jedi or Rebel Officer would be interesting to see, both visually and for the overall lore of the universe.
