Name: Rodisar
Humanoid: No
Classification: Reptilian/Saurian
Homeworld: Rodis
Coloration: Pale Tan or Pink
Biology: Rodisar are crocodylomorphs from the planet Rodis. They had pale, scaly skin, two horns protruding from the top of their head, large nostrils, an overbite sporting two large front teeth, and big, bright blue eyes. Their upper torso was significantly (and possibly disproportionately) larger than it’s legs, and it had a long, thick tail protruding from it’s rear. Rodisar also had large, four-fingered, clawed hands, and three clawed toes below their very prominent calf muscles. Their skin and scales protected them from extremely colds, and it would seem their luminescent eyes aided their ability to see in the dark.
Lore: Next to nothing is known about the Rodisar culture. We do know that they were considered to be a primitive species, and were engaged in some massive planetary civil war known as the “Winter Wars” when slavers arrived on their planet and enslaved most of, if not all of them. Afterwards, they were often sold to the highest bidder for entertainment, and many were placed in gladiatorial matches as contestants because of their large size and warrior history.
Legends/Canon: The Rodisar only exist within Legends.
Unexplored: There’s a lot here that does remain unexplored, although when the mass enslavement of a species is involved, usually they end up split up and distributed across the galaxy. That means that exploration in the “modern eras” will involve diving less into their culture as a whole, and more into individual Rodiar’s characterizations scattered here and there.
Still, you can ask questions like: How do such primitive creatures adjust to suddenly being thrust into the outside galaxy? Who enslaved them? What were the Winter Wars? Were they capable of speaking basic, and if so, did they have any different speaking mannerisms usually associated with more primitive species? Did they enjoy gladiatorial combat, or were they forced to fight against their will? In the aftermath of the collapse of the Republic or Empire, did they come back together as a people and try to repopulate Rodis? There are so many questions that can be explored through the eyes of an individual Rodisar character.
I also believe that they generally just need some artistic exploration. The images provided above are the only visualizations that exist of Rodisars, and since they didn’t get the treatment of being placed in other external media like they’re fellow 2003 Clone Wars Animation crocodylomorphs, the Trogodiles, it is hard for me to imagine what they would look like in a more realistic sense. I do like the Asiatic (possibly Mongolian) stylization of their clothes, however, and that could be further explored both artistically and even socially if is so desired! (There is this one piece of Rodisar fan art depicting them as a Rebel soldier circulating the internet that I really like, and I would love to see more of that!)
Additional Notes: As far as the average Star Wars “enslaved species” goes, Rodisars don’t get many points for originality. However, there is just enough backstory there to spark intrigue. And with the right settings, themes, and characters, I do think there could be some great potential to be found here! Since they have not been canonized, and possibly never will, you truly can do whatever with the Rodisar in your fan work. There is really only one, very cliché rule: “Have fun with it!”
