Biology: The Baxthrax were an uncommon and unusual sentient humanoid species found throughout the galaxy. They stood approximately the same height as the average Human, but possessed some very unique moth-like traits as well. They had two-toed feet, with one toe having a large toenail while the other being much more claw-like and most likely prehensile. They appeared very muscular with well defined calf and thigh muscles. Their hands had three fingers, each ending in a claw similar to their hooked toe. Their arms also seem irregularly long for a fairly near-human species.
The head of a Baxthrax was long and mottled. They had massive teeth lining their low hanging mouths, and may or may not have possessed proper lips. They had flat noses and massive eyes that stretched up and around the sides of their heads. Their pupils were also narrow slits giving them a most unsettling appearance. Their long ears laid back flat against the sides of their heads, and they possessed what appeared to be three (or seven) dark brown, antenna-like plumes jutting from the top of their heads. There was one large one extending from above each of their eyes in place of eyebrows. These larger ones were split into three segments and may have been one conjoined growth or three individuals. The final one was located directly on top of their head.
The most noticeable trait of the Baxthrax was their large insectoid wings. They technically only possessed two distinct wings, but each one was split into three segments. They were dark brown, much like the “antennae” on the Baxthrax’s head, and were described as being very leathery in texture. While the wings didn’t necessarily seem very practical, the Baxthrax could, in fact, fly. To what extent is currently unknown, but they were at least strong enough to carry their own bodyweight off the ground.
Lore: Next to nothing is currently known about the Bathrax, aside from the fact that every instance we’ve seen to date was found on Nar Shaddaa, and that they were generally considered “simple” (or “stupid” according to some galactic denizens). While they could dress themselves, perform manual labor, and presumably communicate, they were still often regarded as lesser than or even borderline non-sentient by other species for some reason. At least some of this could be attributed to their intimidating outward appearance, as well as their moth-like single-minded nature when focusing on performing a task, but the full reason for this negative sentiment has never really been explained.
Continuity: The Baxthrax are currently relegated to Star Wars Legends material.
Unexplored: As you can see, much is left to be desired in regards to the lore behind the Baxthrax. Some important questions to ask when creating your own Baxthrax character or at the very least incorporating them into one of your writings include: Were they native to Nar Shaddaa, or did they have another homeworld and some just migrated to the Smuggler’s Moon? How intelligent were they actually? How, if ever, did they utilize their wings? Have there ever been any famous Baxthrax, or have they participated in any major galactic events? And how long has the species been sentient and known by the rest of the galaxy? Diving into our usual list of worldbuilding concepts would also be useful in further fleshing out this species and maybe granting us a bit of insight into their mysterious presence.
Additional Notes: As a simple species, some may say they may not make for the most interesting of characters, though I can’t deny that they do have an intriguing design, and lore that surrounds them is relatively distinct. Winged sentient species, especially non-avians, are few and far between and could make for some very interesting character designs. Personally, I think they just need a little bit more lore expansion before I would choose one as a main character over something like , say, a Pastorian or even a Diathim in my writings, though their unique place of maltreatment within the universe could be worthy of its own stories.
