Fillithar

Last Updated: 2/15/2024

Name: Fillithar

Humanoid: No

Classification: Serpentine

Homeworld: Fillithar

Coloration: Red or Green

Biology: The Fillithar were a sentient snake species from the planet sharing their name. They were known for their massive, long bodies that we know could be well over 4 meters in length. They had soft, tan underbellies, with the rest of their bodies being covered in a thick layer of pronounced scales that have been observed as being green or red in coloration (although other colors seem plausible). Their heads had small outcrops jutting from the back, almost giving them the appearance of a dragon. Their eyes were large and glossy, possessing incredibly keen eyesight. They also had long, pink tongues that periodically flickered in and out of their mouths, enhancing all of their other natural senses as well. They had sharp teeth, and despite their biology, they could in fact speak Basic.

Lore: Not much has been revealed about the Fillithar so far. We know that they could be found throughout the galaxy, and generally seemed like a rather peaceful people. They were great communicators and were invested in galactic politics. They were allied with the Galactic Republic and New Republic, and held a seat in the senate of both. At least one was also a Jedi during the High Republic, meaning they could be Force Sensitive and have been a part of the Republic for some time.

Legends/Canon: The Fillithar are a rather new species and can only be found in Canon Star Wars material.

Unexplored: We know some of the broader facts about the Fillithar race like their political affiliations, however, a lot of the specifics have been left unexplored so far. Some things to explore that can further flesh out the Fillithar and set them apart from other serpentine species include: What is their homeworld like? How do they build, fight, travel, etc. when they don’t have limbs? What kind of jobs can they do, what do their cities look like, and how does their economy function? Do they have any unique traditions, rules, or religious beliefs? When did they develop sentience, as most animalistic species evolved much later than other more humanoid ones? And how were they discovered, how and when did they become affiliated with the Republic, and do other species treat them as lesser beings (similarly to the Anacondan) based off of their appearance and capabilities?

Additional Notes: As far as basic serpentine sentient species go, the Fillithar are one of my favorites. Their lore and appearance is just unique enough to stay interesting, and I like the role they play in the New Republic. I really do want to see more Fillithar characters in the future, and I’m curious as to how well they would translate to live action.
