Woostoid/Woostroid

Last Updated: 5/23/2024

Name: Woostoid/Woostroid

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Alternative/Near-Human

Homeworld: Woostri

Coloration: Yellow or Orange

Biology: The Woostoids were a highly intelligent, fairly human-like bipedal species hailing from the watery world of Woostri. Unlike most species from oceanic planets, the Woostoids were not amphibious nor aquatic. They were, however, thin and lanky, with orange or yellow pigmentation. Like most humanoids, they had five-toed feet and five-fingered hands, as well as much of the other common anatomy.

Their elongated heads, however, were much more distinct, having no nose, massive, black eyes, flat ear cavities, and dark red or clack hair. Their eyes were fantastic for taking in massive amounts of information, and they rarely needed to blink. Oftentimes their faces were a smooth, solid gold or yellow, but some did have naturally occurring black markings and a more wrinkled visage. They could speak Basic, as well as most other languages, however, they preferred to speak in their native tongue of Woostese. They also had naturally long lifespans, sometimes living over twice as long as the average humans.

Lore: The Woostoids (occasionally spelled “Woostroids” instead) developed sentience long before the Old Republic, however, at that point their homeworld was covered in lush, tropical land masses. Sometime before 25,000 B.B.Y. an undefined natural cataclysm occurred that caused the sea levels to rise and engulf almost all of the planet’s land mass. Escaping to the few remaining islands, the incredibly intelligent Woostoids set out to combat their changing planet by creating highly advanced cities.

These cities became some of the most advanced civilizations in the galaxy at the time, boasting full automation and operated completely on state of the art NeuroSaav Model 608 Mega’puters. The rest of the galaxy marveled at their advancements in computer science, their databases being second only to the city-planet of Coruscant. The massive cities across Woostri, especially the capital Gopsthal, had reached a near utopic state when the Woostoids looked towards the stars.

Many galaxy famous philosophers, explorers, scientists, and engineers originated from Woostri. While many of the locals were content with living among their brilliant cities, others traveled the stars in search of answers, and most large corporations had at least a few Woostoids among their payroll, as they were usually responsible for many of the galaxy’s greatest innovations.

Along with being brilliant, the Woostoids were notoriously peaceful. They did not develop weaponry on Woostri, and for the most part they were left alone by the rest of the galaxy. There is no indication that the Woostoids ever joined the Galactic Republic, but they did interact with Republic researchers and historians. Their cities soon became tourist hotspots, and the few remaining white sand beaches were popular among vacationers. The Woostoids welcomed this influx of offworlders and even promoted permanent immigration as they loved to show off their technological advancements.

The Woostoids prioritized finding the perfect balance of work and recreation. The more they automated, the more time downtime they had. Almost every Woostoid was naturally great with computing, and smart devices could be found almost everywhere throughout their homeworld. Both work and leisure time involved computing and brainstorming. They were addicted to order and logic, making sure never to never let anyone know they made mistakes. They also loved the use of large words, and grew disturbed when people used contractions, slang, abbreviations, or shorthand. They also grew disoriented during any sort of chaotic situations, losing their composure and freezing up when standard logic or decision making couldn’t be applied to a situation.

For this reason, they rarely interacted with the Force or Force users as certain aspects of it were beyond the realm of quantifiability. This meant that they were completely fine with being located in Separatist space during the Clone Wars. They also loved the Empire and were major supporters of their rise to power. They didn’t condone the senseless violence they inflicted on others, but considered the majority of what the Empire did as perfect because of the order and peace they thought it brought to the galaxy. When the Empire arrived on Woostri, they were welcomed with open arms and given all of the support and technology they needed. In turn, the Empire treated them well until the end of the Galactic Civil War. The Woostoids did eventually join the New Republic, but many of them were still Imperial sympathizers and were dissatisfied with the New Republic’s ways.

Legends/Canon: When I initially published this article back in January, 2021, the Woostoids were still not Canon (though their homeworld technically was). As of April, 2024, I am finally happy to announce that the species has made the leap into Canon, currently in nothing more than name and a brief description, thanks to John Jackson Miller’s “The Living Force” novel (though said name is oddly spelled Woostroid, the added “R” potentially being a mistake)!

Unexplored: The Woostoids were incredibly fleshed out in Legends. In Canon, we know they exist, but clearly they have not made as much of an impact on the galaxy as their EU counterparts. There is no mention to their civilization or massive cities or even their advanced technology. So the question is, what is their distinguishing trait in Canon? Have they been working unseen on technology that others then took the credit for? Are they pulling the strings behind some of the most famous galactic corporations that we have come to know? Did they still support the Empire, and would they also be supporters of the Centrists/First Order? And what happens if a Woostoid is born Force Sensitive? Do they repress it, embrace it, try to study it, or just become extremely overwhelmed? There are still some interesting things to explore both in and out of Canon!

Additional Notes: They may be slightly unsettling to look at, but I do like where they took the species. There are a lot of similarities to species like the Givin, Phindian, Roonan, and even Nautolan, however, there are still enough unique differences to keep them interesting. I like a species rooted in essentially just computer science, and their behinds-the-scenes role in Legends was a nice revelation. I can’t wait for Woostri to eventually be explored more in Canon, but until then, I also think the Woostoids would be very fun to explore in your own Star Wars fan work, so have at it!
