Hutlarian

Name: Hutlarian

Humanoid: Yes

Classification: Near-Human/Alternative

Homeworld: Hutlar

Color: Yellow or Orange

Biology: The Hutlarians were a near-human species who had biology resembling that of a Duros. We don’t know many details, but they had yellow or orange skin, approximately the same height and build as an average Human or Duros, large, solid red eyes, and some sort of breathing apparatus. They were used to damp, chilly, dark environments and were usually very fit. It is unclear if they are bald, or if they did in fact have hair on the top of their heads. We know that near-Duros and/or Duros offshoot species exist, so it’s very possible that the Hutlarians are one of those species.

Lore: The Hutlarians originated on the pseudo-planet known as Hutlar, known for being small, damp, and dark. They were a very loyal people, usually serving as bodyguards, militants, or laborers for the local lords and “Ancient Houses” of the Senex-Juvex Loop Hyperlane region (where Hutlar was located). This was possibly due to them being enslaved long ago and forgetting about their history, believing they had always served the lords willingly. This was reinforced during the “Crimson Days’ when the warlord known as Osted Picutorion attacked the system and seemingly liberated the Hutlarians. Instead of embracing their newfound freedoms, they continued to seek out the lords of the Ancient Houses so that they could serve them until death. They also had unique, seemingly cultural, heavy armor that presumably helped protect them from the elements as well as in combat.

Legends/Canon: The Hutlarians are not Canon, although they have appeared in media printed after the Disney buyout, specifically in the Star Wars (1977) #108 Special!

Unexplored: Even within Legends, there’s a lot that was never explored regarding the Hutlarians. If you intend to add them to an upcoming work, definitely look into answering some of the following questions. When did the Hutlarians first come under the jurisdiction of the Ancient Houses? Were all of them subservient to the lords, or did others spread out throughout the galaxy and take up other professions? Because of their appearance, were they a subspecies of the Duros, similarly to the Nemoidians or others? And since we’ve almost solely seen them in armor, what did they actually look like, especially the women and the children? Is the mask on their face a breathing apparatus, just some sort of traditional protection, is it even a translating vocoder? Were there ever any that rebelled against their masters, or that joined and embraced the warlord when he liberated them? And were they ever able to interact with the rest of the galaxy, or even partake in any major galactic events, since most of their history takes place a few hundred years before the High Republic?

Additional Notes: As with most of these one-off species, it can be hard to really characterize them as a whole without detracting from whatever piece of media you’re working on. If you like them because of their appearance, it’s always worth considering just using Duros or Nemoidian instead if you want some really fleshed out lore, although I definitely still see the appeal of their distinct design elements. I also still believe you could tell a compelling story of a species overcoming centuries of brainwashing and familial loyalty to find and establish themselves, so do with that idea what you will!
