Nu-Cosian

Last Updated: 2/6/2024

Name: Nu-Cosian

Humanoid: No

Classification: Reptilian/Saurian/Alternative

Homeworld: Cos Secundu

Coloration: Yellow, Brown, or Purple

Biology: Nu-Cosians are a genetically engineered offshoot of the Cosian species, which were consiered to be their superiors. Originally, they were only considered a subspecies of Cosians, however, they are so radically different that they have since essentially been classified as their own distinct species. The Nu-Cosians were short, hunchbacked, almost turtle-like reptilian creatures. They stood less than 1.2 meters in height, with wrinkled brownish-yellow or sometimes even skin. They had short legs, with what appeared to be two or four-toed feet, as well as four-fingered hands long fingernails

Perched atop their long, upturning necks were a rounded, almost bulbous heads. They had wide mouths, massive eyes that usually remained squinted, and wide-set nostrils on the middle of their face. They could also grow hair, sometimes seen as being stark white, on the tops of their heads and various places on their faces. Unlike true Cosians, they lacked a beak, large, clawed feet, and most prominently, their naturally high midi-chlorian counts, although this was expected when attempting to artificially recreate Force Sensitivity. Nu-Cosians were also generally smaller, shorter, and weaker than their Cosian counterparts. They could pronounce Galactic Basic, and presumably the “Cosian” language as well.

Lore: The Nu-Cosians we’re genetically engineered to colonize the barren world of Cos Secundu within the Cosia System by a group of advanced Cosian scientists some time prior to the Galactic Civil War. Eventually, however, they began moving offworld and slowly spreading throughout the galaxy, although they seemed to remain on friendly terms with their creators and benefactors, the much more well known and prosperous Cosians, dwelling on the lush nearby world, Cosia.

Legends/Canon: While Cosians did exist within Star Wars Legends, Nu-Cosians did not, instead being introduced right at the start of the current established Canon in Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Unexplored: We know a lot less about the Nu-Cosians than we do the true Cosians, meaning there’s a fair bit more unexplored territory, both literally and conceptually. So to kick this section off, we need to first ask, what is Cos Secundu like and why did the Cosians deem it necessary to be colonized by a genetic offshoot of their own kind? What could possibly be the reason for such a bizarre method of expansion, and was their some benefit to the Cosians or was giving a new subspecies a good home the only goal? What did the Nu-Cosians think of their own existence, and how did they view their progenitors? Was their any bad blood between the two races, and were their times they questioned their existence, or did their relationship always remain civilized and well understood? When did the Nu-Cosians begin spread out across the galaxy? Did any ever move to Cosia, and was it possible for them to create hybrid offspring with the Cosians? And what was their culture, society, economy, politics, etc. like, and how did these various worldbuilding traits differ from what we see with the baseline Cosians?

Additional Notes: There’s a whole lot of unique potential here, and this species reminds me a lot of the Delphidians and Ottegans, although there are so key differences like their appearance. Their link to the Cosians, another incredibly interesting species, is also unique and a nice nod to older Star Wars material. While they may not be incredibly quick or mobile, they are still a very interesting character that you should definitely include in your next story!
