Name: Crocin
Humanoid: No
Classification: Diminutive/Reptilian
Homeworld: Croce
Coloration: Brown or Orange
Biology: Crocins were short, stout reptilian beings hailing from the watery world of Croce. They loved dark, cold environments and their eyes worked better the darker it was. They were sensitive to bright lights and high heats, and had to wear goggles when under direct sunlight or in highly illuminated areas. Some parts of their skin were scaly, while others were just incredibly wrinkled and ridged, and they usually took on a pale brown color due to their lack of exposure to sunlight. They had long, caiman-like snouts with three large horns protruding from each side. They had rows of sharp teeth lining the inside of their mouth that can be used to shred almost anything at insane speeds. They had large, three fingered hands with massive claws, and reptilian, clawed feet. They were not capable of speaking Basic, and instead communicated via their native language, “Croci.”
Lore: The only thing really known about the Crocin society is that they built their civilizations in the massive beachside caverns of Croce. The planet is apparently generally very dark, and inside the caves the Crocins required almost no light to operated. The thrived in dark, cool, damp environments, although on rare occasions, they did travel out among the rest of the galaxy. They usually went by single names that some would describe as “sharp” in nature, such as “Scarspike” and “Karjj.”
Continuity: Crocins exist only within the current Star Wars Canon.
Unexplored: So there’s definitely some stuff to unpack here. This is one of those species that hasn’t really shown up en masse during any of the major events, but there’s actually probably a legitimate reason for it this time. They are a reclusive species, they aren’t known for being violent or rebellious, they have no political power, and Croce does not boast any valuable resources that we know of. This would make them an unlikely target for any faction during the Clone Wars, Galactic Civil War, and Resistance eras. One has appeared in the High Republic as a member of the Nihil, but he is no way indicative of the species as a whole.
With all of that being said, the first thing to explore in-depth would be how they have come across access to interstellar travel. Did they invent it? Or did someone show up on their world and give it to them? You can also explore their economy and traditions, as well as whether they are a more peaceful or warrior species. You can explore their biology and evolution. And “seeing” (or at least describing) a cavern city that only has select light sources would definitely be fairly unique. How do offworlders navigate them, or would they even be welcome? As always, exploring answers to the above questions, as well as our usual list of worldbuilding concepts, would be incredibly beneficial for the species’ existence overall.
Additional Notes: As far as reptilian species go, Crocin fall right in the middle of the “design potential” spectrum in my opinion. They have some unique aspects, and possess more of a memorable design than many of the other many Star Wars reptilians. But because they rightfully have a reason to not interact with the galaxy, there will definitely be a severe lack of them found throughout the Star Wars universe. Still, if you are willing to be the one to tell the story of a Crocin adjusting to life off of Croce, and you can find a way around the possible language barriers they present (which shouldn’t be too hard in a universe like Star Wars), then I think you could have a potentially fun and interesting character on your hands! (I would really like to see a story featuring both a Crocin and a Glymphid interacting together, just for fun!)
