Name: Kon’me
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Reptilian
Homeworld: Bal’demnic
Coloration: Pink or Red
Biology: Kon’me were a reddish-pink reptilian aliens hailing from the ocean world of Bal’demnic. They had lumpy, hunched backs covered in dark, mottled spots. They also had two-toed feet and three-fingered hands. Because of their anatomy and planetary environment, it is theorized that they are amphibious in nature as well, although that’s not something we can confirm as of yet.
Lore: The Kon’me of Bal’demnic were in their prime during the clone wars, and their social structure split the species into two distinct groups. Their home planet was cover in one large ocean, which was spotted with small, mountainous islands. The tops of the mountains were reserved for the upper-class social group (and their royal guards) who enjoyed luxurious clothes and bubble homes overlooking the vast oceans. There was no middle class and the wealth was divided very unfairly among the citizens. The second group of citizens were the lower-class, who were forced to reside on the beaches of the mountainous island, allowing for easy access to the oceans. These lower-class Kon’me made up the miners and fishermen of society.
Kon’me had only one valuable export, Cortosis ore, which when refined, could not only deflect lightsabers, but caused them to short out entirely for brief periods of time. At the start of the Clone Wars, the CIS invaded the planet to steal the ores, creating Cortosis Droids, and anti-Jedi melee weapons and armor. Initially, the upper-class denizens reluctantly relinquished control of the planet to the Seperatists. However, the lower-class Kon’me and eventually their entire military put up a valiant fight against the CIS, and the Republic quickly swooped in to assist the reptilian creatures. In a surprising turn of events, the Kon’me saw this as an act of aggression and declared war on the Galactic Republic. They fought both the Republic and the Separatists, eventually driving both off of their homeworld for good. Aside from their brief stint in the war, and to sell their Cortosis to the galaxy, the Kon’me refused to get involved in anything regarding the galaxy outside of Bal’demnic, as both classes had a general disdain for offworlders. This is one of the only reasons why the planet was not one of the greatest tourist destinations in the galaxy.
Legends/Canon: Kon’me only made one short appearance in the Legends 2003 Clone Wars Animation. They have not been brought over into the new Canon. The one bit of history that cannot be canonized is their short involvement in the Old Republic era wars, where they were briefly conquered by an entity from the nearby planet of Urkupp.
Unexplored: While there’s not a whole lot of information here, what has been mapped out so far is very interesting. Usually, when we see worlds that remained neutral during the Clone Wars, they simply remain out of the fight altogether, not declare war on both factions simultaneously. They have a certain spunk to their race that could definitely be explored further, and the fact that they were one of the few planets that naturally held Cortosis makes them all the more interesting. We don’t have a very clear or realistic depiction of what the species looks like, so artistic exploration could be an option as well. You have a leg of leg room to work with this species in a story set during the Clone Wars, and even more freedom writing about them during any era after.
Additional Notes: I really wish we had seen more of this species in either comics of the Clone Wars animated television series. And seeing as they’re not Canon, it is very possible we’ll just never see them again. But even after only appearing in brief scenes, mentions, or even interviews with the cartoon creators, we have already gleaned quite a bit of interesting information about them! (There’s also an image circulating of a Mantellian Savrip that is being passed off as a Kon’me, but I can assure you, they are not one in the same. I’ll link my Mantellian Savrip article here with the specified image once I actually get around to writing it…)
