Name: Anacondan
Humanoid: No
Classification: Reptilian (Serpentine)
Homeworld: Unknown
Coloration: Tan, Brown, and/or Red
Biology: The Anacondans were a sentient snake-like creature lacking any sort of limbs. Their homeworld is unknown, but at least two different “subspecies” have been observed. One of these subspecies is a brown or rust color with a thick body, thin stripes on their back, a triangular head with a wide mouth, a row of small, razor sharp teeth, and fairly human-like eyes on short eye-stalks. The other subspecies was much thinner, although they had bulbous sections periodically throughout their body. This second subspecies also had a small mouth seemingly devoid of teeth, wide lips, a much thinner head, long eye stalks (they could move independent of each other), and blue eyes with horizontal pupils. Unlike the first subspecies, this one also had a much lighter tan body with large red stripes and splotches.
All Anacondans had the ability to speak Galactic Basic Standard, and seemed much more advanced than many of their extremely animalistic sentient counterparts. While they lacked limbs, they could also usually use their prehensile tale to grab objects with surprising ease and accuracy. Adult Anacondans were usually anywhere between 3 and 6 meters in length. It is also speculated that they are cold blooded, although this has yet to be officially confirmed. To compensate for their lack of prehensile utility, some Anacondans could also don specialized suits with limb-like attachments, though its unclear if these were cybernetic in nature, or if they were operated using other means
Lore: Not much is actually known about the Anacondans, despite consistently appearing within the franchise every few years since their inception. We don’t know their original homeworld, nor anything about their society, traditions, or level of development. We know that they could work jobs and needed credits, as seen with an Anacondan bartender during the Clone Wars, and even Dr. Gino’le, Republic Chief of Medical Operation at Starlight Beacon during the High Republic (although you could say he was a bit of an outlier). It was said that they were seen by most other species as simply pests or animals, despite being able to speak and communicate. We do know some were owned as “pets” shortly prior to the fall of the Republic, although it is unclear whether this was more of a consensual agreement, or essentially slavery.
Continuity: All the information we have on the Anacondans is essentially the same across both Legends and Canon, with most of their appearances being relegated to The Clone Wars animated television show (and at least one in the non-canonical “Clone Wars Adventures” MMO). However, recently we have been introduced to an Anacondan in “The High Republic” who outfitted himself with a snake-like mech suit of sort sporting limbs. This is the only time this has been observed as of yet, however, so until more information is revealed, he should be treated as a special, privileged case personally funded by the Galactic Republic.
Unexplored: As you will see with many of these articles, when there isn’t much to go off of as far as unique or extensive features of a species’ lore. Instead, the best place to start if you want to explore them more in your own writing are these basic worldbuilding points: establish their homeworld/system, involvement or role in the galaxy, allegiance to a faction (if any), and history. Also establish what their society, economy, technological development, imports/exports, threats, relationships, culture, traditions, and population status (extinct, near-extinction, enslaved, thriving on their homeworld, found all throughout the galaxy, etc.).
A couple of unique questions to explore with the Anacondans also include: How exactly do they perform every day tasks without arms or legs, as most don’t seem to have access to cybernetics? Do they ever feel disheartened by how other species generally view or treat them? Why do the different subspecies exist, and can some be venomous? Did they just recently evolve from an non-sentient serpent-like species, or have they been sentient for an incredibly long time? How exactly do they travel, carry objects, or even pay for things for that matter? Are they often subject to hunters, poachers, and slavers? What’s up with the pet thing? And do they still have a distinct native tongue, or has it long since been almost universally replaced by the Galactic Basic Standard?
Additional Notes: I wouldn’t say they’re the most unique species in the galaxy, but they do intrigue me as they are seen around the galaxy living different lifestyles or performing different tasks. The main question I just want to see expanded upon sometime in the near future is just, “how?” I think there definitely could be some interesting Anacondan characters you could create who have seen a lot of hardships and oppression, but you definitely need to be up to the challenge of truly characterizing a talking snake.
