Name: Bodach’i
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Reptilian
Homeworld: Unknown
Coloration: Gray or Pale Green
Biology: The Bodach’i were a tall reptilian race hailing from an unspecified planet. They appeared very lizard-like, with scaly gray or green skin, as well as a reptilian-esque face. They have wide, five-toed feet with small pointed toe nails. They also have massive hands with five long fingers and elongated claws. All male Bodach’i had one standard tail, while females sort of had two, one protruding from the back of their lower torso as usual, and another long one extending from the back of their head. It is possible that this secondary “tail” functioned similarly to the sensory lekku “headtails” found on species such as the Twi’lek and Ozrelanso, though that has not been confirmed.
Their heads were especially reptilian shaped, with a long, flat snout ending in two exposed nostrils. The sides of their face were very rigid, and contained two large, pupil-less eyes, as well as wide aural cavities on each side. The females also possessed two small rows of scales shooting outward from above these “ears.” These holes seemingly had the ability to open and close at will. We yet to see the species speak, so it is unclear if they are able to comprehend and/or pronounce Galactic Basic, whether they have their own native tongue that they fully rely on, or if they are an entirely mute species and communicate via non-traditional methods.
Lore: Not much is known about the Bodach’i culture or society, as nearly all of them were plucked from their homeworld by the Empire and placed into slavery. When the Empire had risen to power, the Bodach’i government and people had openly expressed their disdain and unwillingness to cooperate with the new galactic government, so the Empire, as usual, quickly swooped, hunting down and capturing nearly every last one of them. What seemed to be the remainder of the Bodach’i race following this violent event could be found working within the colorful mines of the spice planet, Kerev Doi. The Bodach’i people held a deep-rooted hatred for their masters and the Empire at large, but also present as a hard working and compliant people, seeming to generally slave away until they died rather than outright rebel and suffer again at the hands of those who controlled them.
Continuity: Despite the black and white illustrations, which would otherwise indicate an earlier EU species on this site, the Bodach’i actually do only appear in Star Wars Canon thanks to the novel Lost Stars and it’s manga adaptation, from where the illustrations we possess originate.
Unexplored: So clearly there’s a lot left unexplored in the story of the Bodach’i. We have no idea if they were a part of the Republic, Separatists, or independent prior to the rise of the Empire. We can infer that their societal doctrines varied vastly from the strict authoritarian government the Empire imposed. But what exactly did that society look like before it was utterly destroyed? Was it nomadic, prosperous, technologically advanced, reclusive, or any other number of variations? When and how were they discovered? Had they developed interstellar or even hyperspace technology? And they seem hard working. Was this something brought over from their culture, or simply their attempt to appease the terrifying Empire?
We also do not know exactly when or how they were conquered. We do know it was fairly early into the Empire’s rule, but was it while the military still consisted of Clone Troopers, or after they became more of what we know them as today? Did they go down with a fight, or were they captured without any bloodshed? Was it truly the entire planet that was conquered and enslaved, or were there some who hid or escaped? Was it the Empire who directly enslaved the Bodach’i people, or was it through a second party faction such as the T’surr or the Zygerrians? And are the Bodach’i people on the brink of extinction due to their long and deadly time working at Kerev Doi, or are there pockets of them spread all across the mines of the world?
Lastly, we really don’t know the conclusion of their story. Did they eventually die out or remain as slaves even after the collapse of the Empire? We’re they liberated after the collapse, allowed to assimilated into the New Republic, and returned to their homeworld? Were they maybe freed during the course of the Galactic Civil War itself and allowed to fight alongside the Rebellion? Ultimately, does the story of the fate of the Bodach’i have a happy or somber ending? Additionally, since this comic is highly stylized, what would a Bodach’i look like more realistically, or at least what would they look like colored?
Additional Notes: I actually really like the designs of this reptilian species. It’s not just your run of the mill alien lizard, but it has some interesting proportions and details. I also find it incredibly interesting that it was introduced in one of the still relatively uncommon Star Wars manga (though a number have come out or been announced since I initially published this article). I believe there’s a ton of storytelling potential here left untapped, as evidenced by the rather lengthy “Unexplored” section above, and seeing as they are Canon, they may actually appear in future Star Wars projects. If they do, I will revisit and update this article, but until then, have fun putting them in your own fan works and exploring them in a way you find compelling!
