Name: Bitthævrian
Humanoid: Yes
Classification: Alternative
Homeworld: Guiteica
Coloration: Black, Brown, Dark-Yellow, Dark-Red, or Tan
Biology: The Bitthævrians were a very strange looking humanoid species standing anywhere from 1.8 to 2.2 meters tall, and having a massive and muscular physique. Their bodies were roughly Human-shaped, however, their skin could range from any color on the spectrum of light tan to almost blackish-brown. Their coloration depended upon where they were born on Guiteica, with the darker Bitthævrians appearing up north, while the reds and pinks lived further south, and the light tans appearing only rarely, seemingly not limited to one location. This skin was incredibly thick and had a leathery texture, being nearly impervious to wounds that would penetrate the hide of most other species.
Their elbows and knees were covered in sharp quills that could be used as offensive tools or for defensive protection, and once pulled from the body, they could regenerate fairly rapidly. Their heads were a very bizarre shape, having an upper jaw consisting of 6 incredibly long and sharp fangs. Xenobiologists claimed that these fangs linked the Bitthævrians biologically to the non-sentient Frist Sharks found on Trandosha. It is unclear how exactly they might be related, or what they are doing on planets spread so far apart. However, these fangs are often used offensively and serve as beneficial weapons that could be expertly utilized by the Bitthævrians in combat.
The upper rear portion of the Bitthævrians cranium jutted outwards, and they had several small bony growths that extended from the back of their head. The top of their heads were hairless and ridged, and they had massive brows that nearly consumed their small but powerful eyes. They lacked a formal nose structure, but did have two large nostrils present in the very middle of their faces. As mentioned prior, their eyes were incredibly adept, and actually allowed them to view the infrared spectrum at will. This made them naturally skilled at tracking and hunting, as they could see body heat through objects, determine where blasters had recently been discharged, and just generally perceive things better in any lighting or environment.
It seems that Bitthævrians had the capacity to speak Galactic Basic Standard, but just generally chose not to. They also had a longer lifespan than most beings, which attributed to their ever increasing muscle mass, but it was also possible to determine their relative age by the length and dexterity of their quills. There is no evidence of any Bitthævrians ever having developed Force Sensitivity, and we have no information regarding their natural baseline Midi-chlorian count.
Lore: The Bitthævrians actually have a fairly interesting and lengthy history that intertwines with a number of galactic super powers. Around 50 years prior to the Clone Wars, the Bitthævrian people declared war on the entirety of the Galactic Republic. This was before any GAR had been established, so instead, the Republic simply began to distribute propaganda about the Bitthævrians to all of their affiliated systems, making them out to be some savage and vile race, turning the galaxy against them, and thus fighting the battle on a less conventional front. A contingent of the Jedi Order then allied themselves with the Kaleesh species’ militia and invaded Guiteica. The entire war was started simply because the Bitthævrians opposed the Republic’s rather forceful occupation of the Kadok Regions, and the threat of war was meant more as a simple protest, at least at first. Yet despite this, the Republic decided it would be within their best interest to quell the unrest and opposition before more systems joined them and formed some sort of insurrection or separatist movement.
The Bitthævrians put up a surprisingly competent fight against the Republic, despite their more primitive nature and combat styles. Their orbital defenses engaged the Republic and the Kaleesh above Guiteica, while the many individual Bitthævrian army factions engaged the Jedi on the ground. The “m’Yalfor’ac Order,” the largest branch of the Bitthævrian armies, were actually able to slay a number of Jedi before their eventual defeat. And with the collapse of the m’Yalfor’ac Order, the rest of the war was quickly brought to an end.
From this moment onward, the Bitthævrians held a deep hatred for the Republic and refused to interact with them in any way. They also despised the Jedi, or any Force user, as they had been the deciding factor in their loss against the Republic, and they just generally feared the Force and it’s unpredictability. They remained isolated from the rest of the galaxy for decades, until the rise of the Galactic Empire. They seemed to appreciate this change, as they viewed the Empire as much less corrupt, more transparent with their intentions, and just generally more organized with the systems they occupied. Still, their hate for the Republic had simply transitioned to a dislike, at best, for the new governing body.
Two years after the Battle of Yavin, the m’Yalfor’ac Order rebuilt their orbital defense militia stronger than ever, as they now had unified support from all fifteen continents/armies on Guiteica. When the Rebel Alliance approached the Bitthævrians about joining their cause and working towards a New Republic, the Bitthævrians immediately took this as a threat and saw the Rebellion as nothing more than the remnants of the Republic that had humiliated them not so long ago. They essentially declared war on the Rebellion on the spot, although they were still building their forces with largely outdated technology, so they posed little threat in their present state. And when the Rebellion pulled away from them, there was really no more conflict between the two. They did throw a fit when the New Republic was established, but it seems that they never actually declared war on them again.
As you can tell, the Bitthævrians loved war. In fact, their entire society revolved around combat and training for wars. Their individual status in society was determined by how well they could fight once they reached a certain age. This rule applies for both sexes, and everyone was expected to fight eventually. Only the absolute best warriors became tribe or military leaders, and the highest offense a Bitthævrian could commit would be to insult or dishonor the said leaders. The result was immediate execution, although most Bitthævrians would not take this sentence lying down, and would instead either fight for their life or run as far as they could. The Bitthævrians’ bloodlust was so intense that even if one of their own offenders fled to the opposite end of the galaxy, they would still eventually be tracked down, found, and killed. Once a Bitthævrian began a dedicated hunt, they would never, under any circumstances, give it up.
This was really the only reason a Bitthævrian would leave Guiteica, however. They were all isolationists and hated interacting with offworlders as they viewed them all as weak and below them. It was rare but possible to earn their respect through combat, but only if it was fair and square, with no outside advantages outside of your natural size, speed, and skill. They despised anything they deemed as cheating, lying, or manipulating, which often put them at odds with the famous (or infamous) Bothan species, as well as sometimes the Kaleesh, and of course, this also included any Force Adepts. Bitthævrians were always honest, and had a somewhat warped sense of honor, but they were dedicated in their beliefs.
One major tradition the Bitthævrians held were personal combat rituals, where almost any dispute was settled via one-on-one combat, and where the only weapon allowed were “Dematoils.” Every Bitthævrian owned a personalized Dematoil, a form of “morningstar mace,” where the more spikes on it were indicative of how strong an individual Bitthævrian was. Each time a duel was won, the victor was allowed to pluck the largest quill from their opponent and add it to their Dematoil.
The Bitthævrians’ planetary economy revolved around mining valuable resources from their planet’s crust. Their primary export was an ore known as Yttrium, which was sought after by the Republic and later the Empire, although it’s purpose is still unknown. An offworld independent mining company, Vulca Minerals, attempted to stake out parts of Guiteica and eventually partnered with the Rebellion to do so, but because of the way they ordered the locals around, they were considered unwelcome guests and were quickly chased off of the planet. The Bitthævrians owned and operated a company known as Kadok Resources was the main exporter of the material, and they were generally, and surprisingly, unbiased with who they sell to, although they preferred to avoid anyone affiliated with any Galactic Republic.
The Bitthævrians had a very bizarre naming convention, with most names being fairly similar due to their innate nature. The first name a Bitthævrian received was from the season they were born. Guiteica has exactly seven seasons, which are as follows: Giil, Quul, Aul, Zoul, Tweil, Jael and Quaal. The second name was the family’s surname, which was always inherited from the mother and never the father. Many Bitthævrians then gained a third name when they married, as they also took on their wife’s surname just as they had their mothers. As for their last name (either third or fourth depending on marital status), they generally chose those for themselves, and this is what their friends and family called them by in casual settings. It was never the same or similar to their first or second names, as those were shared by many. Because of this, most Bitthævrians has three or four names, depending on their gender and marital status. Examples include: “Quaal Stavi Giniras,” “Zoul Lavor Xariv Lar,” or “Zoul Minchov Dwæer.”
Continuity: When I first write this article, the Bitthævrians were still relegated to Legends, however, they have since technically been mentioned in Canon, at least by name, with hints that their lore might be similar between continuities, although info is still sparse and we do not know anything about their appearance, with this new info coming from De Agnosti’s “Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon,” which many people don’t even consider Canon anyway.
Unexplored: So there are two large questions I feel we need to ask about the Bitthævrians, one within the context of Legends, and the other in relation to the newer Canon material. First off, did the Bitthævrians actually originate on Trandosha as the Frist Sharks, and just migrate sometime prior or after they evolved sentience? Is it possible they were transported there by Trandoshans long ago and devolved into mindless fish for whatever reason? Or are the similarities purely coincidental in a galaxy of millions of species (although if that’s the case, why has this distinction been intentionally pointed out)? Either way, why are they seemingly so “primitive” and yet also so powerful? What was their initial thoughts regarding the advanced Republic prior to their invasion of the Kadok System? Have there ever been any Force wielding Bitthævrians, and if so, how would the rest of the respond if there was? Would they be ostracized, hunted, worshipped, or even “rescued” away by the Jedi (or Sith/other Force faction)?
The second thing when talking about potentially fleshing them out within Canon is what would have to be tweaked about their history? Did the Republic still team up with the Kaleesh or distribute propaganda? Would the Bitthævrians side with the CIS, or remain neutral due to their isolationist ideals. Would they still be approached by the Rebellion/New Republic? Would the Clone Wars move to their planet to fight over the Yttrium, and how would Yttrium be used? Would the Jedi post-High Republic still invade their world, and how would they play into the larger galaxy as a whole, as the general political and structural climate of the galaxy is a bit different in Canon compared to what we saw in the EU.
Additional Notes: I wasn’t really a fan of the Bitthævrian design initially, but after reading more into them and their established history within the EU, I have actually come to find them incredibly fascinating. This is one of the few instances when characters were introduced within the “Republic era” before the Clone Wars and Galactic Republic had really been established in lore. It’s a really interesting look into the pre-prequel Republic that the Star Wars creators had in mind, and while not everything here fits neatly into the current Canon, a lot of it still can with a little legwork in my opinion. They lived through some really interesting events and had some fascinating history, especially with the Bothans and Kaleesh, and I have come to appreciate this species after doing extended research for this article. I would definitely consider adding this species to a future story should I need a warrior race, and I encourage you to reference or explore them further in your next fan work (or official one if you’re a licensed creator who happened to stumble across this article). They definitely deserve at least that much, if not hopefully more someday!
