Name: Anzellan
Humanoid: No
Classification: Miniature/Beastite
Homeworld: Unknown (Anzell System)
Coloration: Brown, Tan, Pink, & Gray
Biology: Anzellans were small sentient creatures found across the Star Wars galaxy. They had protruding, marble-like black eyes with large upper and lower eyelids, nostrils on the sides of their nose ridges, and and a small, slightly protruding mouth. Their faces were also covered in small patches of hair extending in every direction. They had abnormally large hands (for their size) with four fingers, as well as three toed feet. Their bodies were also very wrinkly. Their eyes contained “floating corneal micro-lenses” which allowed them to see better than most microscopes, making them great with lab and mechanical work. They could seemingly not speak Basic, and instead opted to speak their own language, Anzellan, which had some Basic intermixed with it.
The Anzellans were a miniature sentient species who stood approximately .25 meters in height on average, easily able to be lifted by the average Human-sized individual meaning they were also not incredibly heavy. Being a bipedal race, they possessed two arms and two legs, with five digits on their wide feet while their hands only possessed four long fingers. They had coarse, wrinkled flesh that was usually gray or brown in coloration, although it often grew lighter, generally tan or pinkish, around their stomachs and faces. Anzellans could be quite muscular, especially around their arms, making them quite strong for their size, although they were still a rather slow-moving species.
Anzellan heads were rounded, with protruding brows, a prominent nose ridge, and large lips. Their mouths had a number of tiny teeth in them that seemed to be rather distantly spaced. Their nostrils were actually located at the top sides of the ride running up through the middle of their face, and we often obscured by various wrinkles. They also had bulging, glassy eyes with white or yellow sclera and massive black pupils. These eyes were said to have possessed naturally occurring “floating corneal micro-lenses” which granted the species an incredible degree of vision and allowed them to selectively view something on a literal microscopic level, making Anzellans fantastic technicians as well as medical care providers.
Additionally, Anzellans were known for having bushy eyebrows and various patches of facial hair that was usually somewhat stylized. This hair could be thick brown when they were younger, but thinned and grew more scraggily and white with age. Anzellans were believed to have been able to live for quite some time, although the extent of their lifespans remains undefined, although, while they were a naturally wrinkled species, we do know they grew even more wrinkled over time. Anzellans did have the capacity to pronounce Galactic Basic Standard, albeit with strange quirks and inflections, although they usually stuck to speaking their own native tongue of “Anzellan.” Suiting their naturally high-pitched and squeaky voices, this language consisted of various shrills and grumbles, although it had long integrated broken Basic phrases into it’s structure as well. We know that Anzellans were strictly insectivorous, surviving on a diet exclusively of insects. It has also been revealed that the species possess purple-colored blood.
Lore: Despite their consistent appearances we still know very little about the Anzellans as a collective species. Their home within the Anzell System had been discovered some time prior to the High Republic era, and could be found situated among the infamous Mid Rim region known as “The Slice.” Over the years they had garnered a reputation as being some of the greatest “droidsmiths” in the entire galaxy, with their powerful eyes and small statures allowing them to really get up close and personal with any piece of tech they worked on. They were also known for being a bit fiery, not enjoying when others looked down on them due to their size and “cute” appearance, especially when they were infantilized.
Still, they were overall a friendly species, and quite a few Anzellans left their homeworld to become technicians, engineers, inventors, and droidsmiths across the galaxy, earning themselves quite the pretty penny. Quite a few struck out on their own as independent contractors and later leaders of the industry, while others formed small communities across various planets that remained non-obtrusive given the small amount of space they required to operate. In fact, many Anzellans didn’t broadcast their services, instead only taking jobs by those who knew of their whereabouts while they lived in hidden cubbies under established buildings or loosely allied themselves by shady organizations that already operated in secrecy.
One of the most famous Anzellans was the legendary shipbuilder, Shug Drabor, who helped develop the Chandrila Star Line’s popular MPO-1400 Purgill-Class Star Cruisers. Another was the infamous droidsmith, Babu Frik, who gained galactic relevance given his role within the Sith Eternal’s collapse leading up to and during the Battle of Exegol. Small groups of Anzellans could also be found on planets like Nevarro and Vespaara around 9 ABY, the latter hosting the “Scrap Salvage” competition within the Hunters of the Outer Rim’s “Grand Arena.” Most Anzellans usually had a similar manner of dress, with simple robes or loincloths that exposed much of their skin, seemingly due to the work-intensive tasks that they devoted most of their time to. They almost never wore shoes, although they were usually seen with some sort of complex goggle apparatus on their heads that seemingly protected their sensitive eyes during welding while also honing their already impressive sense of sight.
Continuity: The Anzellans are exclusive to the current Star Wars Canon.
Unexplored: There’s a lot we know about the Anzellans, and a lot we don’t. In this section, I simply want to explore a few questions that, if answered, would help us better understand, characterize, and write about the Anzellans in the future. For starters, when were they first discovered and what sort of creatures might they have evolved from? What was their homeworld name, what was it like, and was it well suited for a small race like the Anzellans, or was life there perpetually treacherous? Did the Anzellans independently develop advanced technologies in the past, or did they need to be introduced to it by outsiders before they realized what many of their true callings were? And if the former is true, is it possible numerous highly advanced micro-cities dotted their homeworld’s landscape? Were they members of the Galactic Republic at any time, were they possibly involved in any major galactic conflicts, and was it likely they were plagued by slavers who sought them out for their “value” as a species?
How many Anzellans were truly spread out across the galaxy, and how big could their semi-hidden communities grow? Were they ever viewed as pests anywhere, or was their presence seen as a blessing upon any city they resided? What was the extent of their microscopic sight, and how exactly did it work/how much control did they have over it? Did they possess any additional unique anatomical traits that we have not yet been made aware of? Who were some of the most famous (or infamous) Anzellans throughout galactic history? And would they continue to grow in prominence or dwindle into obscurity in the coming eras? Alongside these questions, just getting a concrete at the following worldbuilding traits would be super helpful: their history, society, culture, government, politics, economy, religions, philosophies, traditions, habits, cultural practices, galactic contributions, unique technological advancements, etc.
Additional Notes: Can I say I “fricking” love Babu Frik (as well as the Anzellan language)? There’s a reason why even “sequel trilogy haters” seen to excuse Babu Frik’s existence, claiming he’s one of the only good things to come from TROS, and it’s all due to the collection of awesome elements that come together to form this incredibly fun design! I’m so glad they continue to see life throughout the franchise, and was very excited when we learned they were going to appear in The Mandalorian Season 3 (which did not disappoint). If you didn’t know, this was the first article I published on this site, and while it was pretty poorly constructed and missing a ton of information when I wrote it back in October 2020 (for my Wattpad account no less), I’m thankful that I’ve had a steady stream of reasons to come back and update/rewrite it from time-to-time!
